Fall Beauty Favorites

 photo vsco-photo-4_zps2lrzskw3.jpg
My makeup routine is fairly straightforward throughout the year, but from season to season I find myself switching out a few products to address weather-specific needs: spring calls for lighter shades, summer a dewy complexion and a lighter touch all around, and for fall and winter, extra hydration and a matte-ified finish. Maybe something a little bolder than usual, too.

I hadn't yet made the summer to fall transition when my stick of Josie Maran concealer ran dry recently, so it was perfect timing when I received a couple of products from Perfekt a week or so later. Since the air is drying out -- though the temperature remains stubbornly warm -- I thought I'd share a bit about my routine these days and what I'm using.

In order of application:

Acure Organics Seriously Firming Facial Serum: This 'serum' (it's basically an oil) is meant to be worn under the corresponding moisturizer, but I wear it alone at night as an intensive treatment for dry skin, applying it after I wash my face. I've definitely noticed a difference, and I absolutely love how it smells.

Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre: A coworker turned me on to this French moisturizer and after picking up a small tube at a Parisian pharmacy, I swear by the stuff as a day cream. I was happy to find that UO now sells a large tube of it (they sell small sizes as well), which lasts months. This is a French classic, not greasy at all while deeply hydrating and providing a smooth surface for makeup to glide on to. Also, no breakouts! Always a plus.

Perfekt Skin Perfection Gel in Luminous: I tend to keep things pretty simple from day to day on my face, while I'll occasionally wear BB Cream or foundation, I typically reserve those products for the dead of winter when I'm really feeling pallid. This gel goes on smooth and melts into skin, leaving it matte and, well, luminous. It's basically a primer, but can be worn alone to blur or beneath other products. What I love about Perfekt is that the products can really be stretched. One little dab goes a long way.

Perfekt Skin Perfection Conceal in Luminous: A very small dab of this mousse-like product is enough to conceal beneath my eyes, around my nose, a few scars on my chin, and the dark area between my eyes. I'll also pat some on my lids to act as a primer before applying eye shadow. Right now I'm reaching for lighter shades of shadow with metallic touches to pop against my liquid liner.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara: A birthday gift card burning through my pocket is what lead me to this fantastic mascara. I grabbed it in the two pack of mascara and liner (linked here), and both are proving to be fast favorites. I've had issues in the past with mascaras transferring to my under-eye area, but this formula stays put while being relatively easy to remove.

Stila Convertible Color: I picked up several pots of this particular shade while working at J.Crew a few years ago, and I'm on my last pot! I use this exclusively as blush on my cheek bones and down the bridge of my nose to add a little color. The terra cotta-like shade lends a bit of a tan effect, making me feel just a little less pale in the colder months.

NYC Liquid Lip Shine: There's just something about a nude lip + a cat eye that feels so very perfectly retro to me, I'll never give it up. I've been wearing a cat eye since college and I think at this point it's my signature. I recently received this light colored gloss and love how it contrasts with a dramatic eye.

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil (not pictured): I just grabbed a small vial of this to try this past weekend and now plan on purchasing the larger version. This oil is incredible at removing makeup (including stubburn mascara), dirt, and oil, while rinsing clean. I'll typically do a quick rinse with cleanser on nights after I've worked out, but otherwise this oil rinses right off and you're good to apply moisturizer after patting your face dry.

Also pictured:

Celestite Crystal: Not beauty per-se, but rather something beautiful. I keep a handful of crystals on my nightstand and this is my latest acquisition. I love how crystals infuse a space with organic energy, and Celestite is known to be purifying and meditative, perfect for bringing mindfulness to your fall routine.

Campfire Candle: Oh, this candle! One thing I miss more than anything is having fall campfires in our back yard in Pittsburgh and back home in Maine. This candle brings all those memories right back and alters the mood in our home perfectly. It sits near my crystals and makeup on my nightstand, bringing it's sweet vanilla scent to my space.

We were supposed to go hiking last Sunday, instead we slept right through our 6 AM alarms and rose at 9:30. Whoops. Despite our best efforts, sometimes getting out of bed is a feat of strength in and of itself. We were able to salvage the day, however, with an impromptu trip to New Hope and plans of getting over to Bowman's Hill Tower. Thinking this would be straightforward and a nice spot to see some foliage... and free. Nope. Turns out that place is a tourist trap and it costs money. There were people dressed in colonial garb, even. Not exactly what we had in mind. After snapping a few pics of each other and some trees, we got the hell out of there and went for a drive in the country instead while we listened to the Halloween edition of Snap Judgement. A solid day, but definitely not what we expected to end up doing.

Like everyone else on the planet I love fall. I love the cool weather. I love being able to wear boots with just about everything. I love finally being able to wear the cool weather clothes I bought this summer. Like these jeans. The irony isn't lost on me when I say I went all the way to France to find the perfect pair of US-made Levi's. Ha. I've been digging simpler looks lately, especially for when we're just kicking around. Jeans, boots, jacket, with a cool accessory like these polka-dotted glasses from Mooreaseal. I'm obsessed. I have a thing for sunglasses and my girl Moorea's sweet shop is topping my list right now for places to find them. This particular pair exceeded expectations with their neutral, matte shade, solid construction, and I love how the dots are etched - rather than printed - on. Plus they stay on my giant head. Which is always a huge plus.

Get the look: 'Gibson' Sunglasses from Mooreaseal.com, Schott Jacket (similar), Vintage Levi's 501's, Samantha Pleet x Wolverine 1000 Mile boots, J.Crew Tissue Turtleneck

Happy Saturday! Can you believe we're almost at the end of October? This year has flown by so quickly, lately I've found myself thinking a lot about what's happened, where I've been, and how much of it never made it onto this blog. Festivals, trips. Sometimes life moves so fast, it's hard to keep up. This weekend though, I'm hoping to slow down. This month has been a busy one, with a trip to Austin at the very beginning, and my brother in town, I just want to chill in Philly for once, enjoy the leaves and the weather. It's finally starting to feel like fall and I love it. Tomorrow we're hoping to hike the Delaware Water Gap and are keeping our fingers crossed for some foliage. What are you up to?

The Tropics in October: Favorite Green Smoothie Bowl

 photo vscocam-photo-1 10_zpsixjddac4.jpg
Shoutout to my brother for leaving behind his bottle of Vitamineral Green this week before heading back to Oregon. One more powder to add to my arsenal. Despite the weather cooling, my obsession with cold smoothies for breakfast continues. Honestly, I wish I liked oatmeal as much but sometimes you just can't mess with perfection.

Yesterday morning, I subbed a scoop of Vitamineral Green, which tastes like green tea and basically consists of every good-for-you green thing on the planet, for my usual handful of spinach and the results were delicious... and really, really green. A little tropical, a little spicy. If you're tired of pumpkin and apple everything, try this. It might be cold, but winter is long, and there's plenty of time to figure out oatmeal between now and May.

Ingredients:
1 banana, chopped and frozen
Small handful frozen pineapple
1/4 - 1/2 avocado
1 tsp Vitamineral Green
1 tbsp organic maca
2 tbsp hemp protein or hemp seeds
dash of cinnamon, turmeric, and ginger
splash of water

Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Add more water or coconut milk if it's too thick, but not too much. Ideal consistency (in my opinion) should be like ice cream.

Transfer to a bowl and top with what inspires you. I used slivered almonds and shredded unsweetened coconut.

 photo Shopbop_zpsfo3axjxk.jpg
Confession: I, like the rest of the world it seems, love shopping for fall. And I've been very shoppy lately. After ridding myself of seven trash bags worth of extraneous stuff last month, I have room in my life and my closet for a few new, special things. This time around, though, I'm going for the classics. Those special items that can elevate everything. A really great hat. A one and only pair of black skinny jeans. So yes, you could say I'm excited for the Shopbop Friends & Family Sale, which kicks off today. Shopbop has long been one of my favorite places to find key pieces for my wardrobe -- and the free shipping certainly helps.

Happy Saturday, friends! After not being home for three weekends straight, I'm so happy to just be in my house with a cat curled up next to me (currently happening), and a vat of coffee in my hand. This weekend I'm planning on doing some baking and attempting to find the perfect faux-fur jacket at the thrift store, and that's it. Philly feels like fall today and it's awesome. What are you up to?

Have you checked out CyKLu's gorgeous jewelry yet? Love these eucalyptus earrings.

White and Blue at Austin City Limits

Things you don't need at a festival: curling irons, large books. Things you absolutely do need: sunscreen, a major hat, and a good, solid backpack. Extra points if it looks good, fits all your camera gear, and magically transforms into a shoulder bag when you head to the bar at the end of the night. This deep blue, handmade beauty from Bali ELF arrived just in time to be put to work in the camera pit of weekend one of Austin City Limits, and has officially taken its place as my favorite do-everything bag. Plus that color. Who knew cerulean blue would go with absolutely everything?

We rolled in to Austin on Thursday morning, me with a bag full of unnecessary items (see: curling iron), kicking off the three day festival on Friday afternoon. Blazing hot sun, too many tacos, catching as many sets as possible. It was a whirlwind weekend, but an incredible one. Work can be stressful at times, but it's experiences like this that remind me why I do what I do, and why I love it. Standing a few feet away from Father John Misty, Tame Impala... Sylvan Esso... with my camera... I'm not too cool to admit what an incredible experience it is.

More pics to come :)
